Ocean Youth Trust Challenge
Monday 14th June 2010 saw a group of our students set out from the North Pier to travel to Kerrera to board the Ocean Youth Trust vessel Alba Explorer. This was the start of an adventure, learning to sail around the beautiful coast available in Argyll. Following the very important safety briefings the vessel and crew set sail north-eastwards along the coast of Lismore.

Our first night at anchor in Airds Bay was followed by a long challenging sail to Colonsay. Wednesday morning cloudy skies made the long trip from Colonsay up the west coast of Iona and then Mull, our destination Arinagour on the Isle of Coll. A phone call to a grandparent of one of the crew on the Isle of Coll ensured that freshly baked scones awaited the crew on arrival in Arinagour. Thursday morning dawned and we were greeted to the sight of three huge basking sharks sieving out kilos of plankton from the surrounding sea. A short sail took us to Tobermory where our venturers were given the opportunity to grab a warm shower in the new Tigh Solas building and a chance to visit local shops and the houses of Balamory! We then spent the rest of our day sailing down the Sound of Mull, past Lismore Lighthouse to Castle Bay at the south end of Kerrera where we had dinner and anchored for the last time.

After a delicious dinner made by Jenny and Niamh the crew played some messy yet very funny games that included chocolate mousse, caramel crème and after eight mints to make the final memories on the boat fun for all!

The following morning the crew were back to work as we had our final but short sail to Oban Marina in Ardentrive at the North of Kerrera and we also had the job of cleaning the boat for its next adventurers. After we said our goodbyes to the permanent and volunteer crew of OYT, the group of students got aboard the ferry from Kerrera back to Oban.
