Head Teacher Update - Letter 42

19th March in School

19th March 2021

Dear parent/carer and pupils (please share with your children)

I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones all safe and well.

You will be pleased to note that this letter is considerably shorter than the last couple. Previous
letters have highlighted all the information you and your children need to engage in the learning
opportunities available until the Easter Break, copies of which can be found on the school
website.

Coming back to school in this part-time and blended model of learning (some in school and
some online) has had its challenges but I’m pleased to note that our return has progressed as
planned and that all our youngsters have had the opportunity to continue to progress with their
learning in line with the curriculum and as timetabled; though the S1s and S2s have also
benefitted from a great Outdoor Learning provision set up by the Local Authority.

Outdoor Education

All S1 pupils will have the opportunity to take part in an outdoor education session with outdoor
education instructors and staff. The purpose of these sessions is to allow clan groups to work
together and further build clan identity. Both staff and pupils have really enjoyed the sessions
so far.

Diarmid and Fingal S1s had their sessions on Thursday and Friday. Ossian will have their
sessions on Monday and Somerled will have their sessions on Tuesday.

As a result, S1 Ossian pupils should come to school in outdoor clothing on Monday and S1
Somerled pupils should do so on Tuesday. This could be PE kit (preferably with trousers rather
than shorts) as long as pupils bring a warm, outdoor jacket with them and wear suitable outdoor
shoes such as trainers.

The lovely weather has helped make this return all the better. My thanks to everyone who has
contributed to this successful return to school. The comments from staff and pupils about how
wonderful the environment in the school is just now is very pleasing.

Of course many of our children will still face some challenges when completing online tasks,
and some will still be a little anxious. As always I would encourage both pupils and parents to
seek the support of their Guidance Teacher in the first instance. We will provide all the support
necessary to ease any anxiety or practical difficulty at this time.

Senior Assessment Timetable

As you are aware, our pupils will not sit external SQA exams but will undergo assessments
that will provide evidence for SQA certification. This assessment process will begin after the
Easter holidays. I attach a full Assessment Calendar for S4 pupils and S5/6 pupils. It is
important that pupils take a note of each assessment and tailor their study plans accordingly.

>>Easter Study and Senior Assessment Timetables

To support our senior pupils during their assessment term, Mr Champion will be running 45
minute sessions on Google Meet. The first one, for S4 pupils and parents/carers will be on
Thursday March 25th at 18:45-19:30.

The code to join is meet.google.com/cvo-urrb-zxw.

The session will explain how you learn and remember things. It will give lots of practical advice
about how you can improve how you revise and how this can reduce stress. I have attached
an information guide on supporting learning and revision.

Easter Study Timetable

To further support pupils during the Easter holidays, each department is also running some
online support sessions. The details of these sessions and how to access them is also attached
to this letter and on the school website.

IT returns

Can I ask that all IT support we have provided, for example, Chromebooks and Dongles be
returned before the Easter break please. This will enable cleansing and redistribution back to
departments so that learning in classes can take place next term. Senior pupils should return
the items by Wednesday 31st March and BGE pupils on April 1st. This is because we need the
IT back on the last day your child is in. Work for the final Senior Phase or BGE lessons will be
paper or researched-based and there will be no online delivery that day.

Could I also ask that items be handed into the office and addressed to Mrs Reynolds or to Mr
Champion clearly stating which pupil / family is returning them. This will ensure an accurate
record of return, you will be issued with a receipt illustrating that you have returned a borrowed
item.

As you are aware, our pupils will not sit external SQA exams but will undergo assessments
that will provide evidence for SQA certification. I have attached the timetables showing when
pupils will sit these assessments.

Communication

Please keep an eye on all the news and letters on the School App for Parents, we post short
info items for pupils in particular on Instagram and our YouTube channel is full of videos for
you to watch. Please use the “Contact Us” page on the website and email us with your
questions or concerns about anything at all, adding your child’s name and class; or contact
your child’s guidance teacher directly.

I hope you have a great week ahead.

Yours faithfully,

P A Bain
