Head Teacher Update - Letter 55

8th October in School

8th October 2021

Dear Parent / Carer (please share with your child)

I hope this letter finds you and your family all safe and well again.

As you would imagine, the last few weeks have been very busy indeed. The wide range of
courses we offer provide a wonderful array of opportunity… and workload… for both staff and
pupils alike. That’s a good thing! It’s good to be busy learning new skills, gaining more
knowledge and accessing a whole range of new experiences. In the last few weeks, we’ve
seen our Maths kids promoting Maths Week; the eco kids re-starting their re-cycling and litter
pick programmes. We’ve published the talents of our art, music and drama pupils, and watched
our sports programmes all gain momentum. My thanks to the work done by our School of
Shinty Young Ambassadors and for the funds they raised.

You can listen to our musical performances on our YouTube Channel (the performances in the
recent prize-giving video are superb), found here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqVauXoUp5efv8sm1zBk0ig

you can see our virtual (and inter-active) art exhibition here:

https://www.thinglink.com/scene/1502042531574054914

and you can listen you our pupils discussing their exam experiences on our new Podcast
channel here:

There are so many aspects of school life on offer, it’s impossible to publicise them all at once...
well, I could but these letters would be even longer than they are just now. I would ask that you
keep abreast of on-going developments by listening to the Podcasts, flicking through the
Instagram posts or clicking the information and video links we send through the School App for
Parents. Just log onto the App store and download the App.

Of course all that we are doing and planning for is done within the Scottish Government
guidelines provided to schools, which can be found here:

Staffing

I was asked about staffing the other day and thought you would like an update.

We are currently fully staffed, though sadly Hanna Pyne, one of our RMPS teachers leaves us
today. Hanna has been a fantastic asset to the school. She is a popular a teacher with both
kids and staff alike and we wish her well in her new post. I have already held interviews and
Hanna’s replacement, Cara Ross, will join us soon.

Although we are fully staffed in Maths at the moment, we still have an advert out for an
additional teacher and that advert closes tonight. I’ll interview for that position as soon as we
return.

I would also like to introduce Peta-Jane Miller to you all as she takes up her post as DYW
(Developing the Young Workforce) Cluster Lead for Oban and Tiree. PJ will be working closely
with us and approaching businesses, both great and small, to seek support in developing our
range of experiences and opportunities for all our young people across Oban and Tiree.

Success

I just held an assembly this morning praising all those youngsters who went through their
assessments in the summer. We now have almost all the results in and the level of success
achieved is outstanding. This success has come as a result of a lot of commitment, hard work
and dedication by both pupils and teachers alike. However, I think it important to also thank all
the friends and family who gave encouragement and support to all our kids going through the
assessment period in what was a very stressful and demanding time. Well done to all involved.
Of course, the annual cycle of hard work, study and more assessments continues and in an
effort to provide further support, and bearing in mind the relaxation of Covid restriction, we can
now bring back some additional external support and once again we will work with a company
called Live-N-Learn to deliver Growth Mindset opportunities for both our pupils and parents.

Live –N- Learn Sessions

Live-N-Learn will be delivering Growth Mind-Set and Study Skills workshops to S4, S5 and
S6 pupils from Tuesday 26th to Thursday 28th October.

More information about the content of these workshops can be found here:

https://live-n-learn.co.uk/courses/mindset-for-revision

There will also be a virtual workshop for parents on Tuesday 26th October at 6.30 p.m. This
workshop will help parents to support their children to achieve their full potential.

All parents are welcome to join this virtual event. Please find the details below:

Homework Club and Outreach Sessions

We will be re-starting Homework Club after the October holidays. This will be on a Tuesday
and Wednesday from 3.45 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. in the Learning Hub. All year groups are very
welcome.

Parents Outreach sessions

We will also be running some Outreach Sessions on a Tuesday and a Thursday Evening. If
you would like more details about this then please email:

Debbie.Gillies@argyll-bute.gov.uk

We are getting closer to launching our skills framework in Oban and Tiree High School and
continue to seek thoughts and ideas from pupils, staff, parents and partners. These skills and
attributes will help focus our attention to employability skills that are present in every lesson.
Look out for an interactive resource coming your way soon. Meantime, if you have any
suggestions around us improving on this framework, please email:

Senior Pupil Leadership Team

I mentioned in the last letter that our SPLT have been very busy, and that graft continued with
more assemblies, more support for pupils in classes and clubs and with the running of more
assemblies and in establishing the new Podcasts. Phew!!! Well done to them all.

Still to come: Halloween (kids can come dressed in a costume on Halloween (jeans and t-shirt
don’t count); Remembrance Day; St Andrew’s Day and lots of exciting Christmas events. Not
to mention the return of our school Jingles.

Breakfast Club and Pupil Support

Breakfast Club has also started up again but on a limited basis due to ongoing Covid
restrictions. If you feel your child would benefit from this the please email:

Aileen.Jackson@argyll-bute.gov.uk

Our Family Liaison Officers and Youth Worker are continuing to support many of our pupils
with their mental health and their learning. Activities include gym club, group sessions, helping
with Nurture, picking up pupils in the morning and many one to one support sessions.

Support

Should you have any questions, ideas or even concerns please contact your child’s Guidance
Teacher or use the “Contact Us” page on the website. Our clan pastoral teams are here to
support you and the Guidance staff, Family Liaison Officers, Youth Worker, IT support staff,

children.
