Head Teacher Update - Letter and Video 47

28th May in School

Dear Parent / Carer (please share with your child)

I hope this letter finds you and your family all safe and well again.

Since my last letter to you all we have received further guidelines from the Scottish Government. There are no large scale changes and all the same precautions I continue to re-iterate to you remain in place. There are some changes we have found useful, particularly linked to teaching PE and Music. These have been very helpful in the last week or so. The full guidelines can be found here:

https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-on-reducing-the-risks-in-schools/

I thought you would like some updates on the key (non-Covid) issues we are working on as we draw this session to a close.

New Timetable

Timetables will be issued to pupils on Friday 4th June and our new timetable will begin on Monday 7th June.  We will now have a 5 period day as follows:

Period 1 9.05 - 10.15 a.m.
Period 2 10.15 - 11.20 a.m.
Break 11.20 - 11.35 a.m.
Period 3

11.35 - 12.40 p.m.

Lunch 12.40 - 1.30 p.m.
Period 4

1.30 - 2.35 p.m.

Period 5 2.35 - 3.40 p.m.

Please note that until Covid restrictions change we will continue to have break in classrooms. We have reverted back to one lunchtime, however pupils will remain in their year group bubbles with designated areas for each year group outside and inside if the weather is very bad.

Current S6 Farewell

We would like to invite all S6 pupils to come in to school on Friday 4th June at 9 a.m. We will hold a socially distanced farewell presentation and give the young people who are leaving us a chance to say goodbye to their teachers. Our current S6 pupils have been a fantastic group of young people to work with. We are very proud of them and wish them well for the future.

All of the current group of S6 pupils have also been sent a link to contribute to their Yearbook and to buy a Leaver’s hoodie if they wish to do so. The deadline for both of these is Monday 31st May. Could I ask you to encourage your son or daughter to contribute to their yearbook if they have not already done so? This will give them a lovely memento of their time in High School and is free of charge.

Prize-giving will be held on Friday 3rd September. More details will follow.

We also hold a seniors dinner on the evening of the 3rd September, possibly a Summer dance, depending on the Covid rules at the time.

Applications for our new SPLT

Can I encourage all new S6 pupils to consider applying for next session’s Senior Pupil Leadership Team. This will give them invaluable experience of the application process and if they are successful will enable them to develop their leadership skills and contribute to the wider life of the school.

To apply, pupils need to log on to the Google Classroom (code: 77tx6v4) and submit the application form by Friday 4th June.

The experience of applying, and potentially of securing a place, will be a fabulous addition to any pupil’s CV and such experience increases the chances of securing a University place or serving them well in a job interview. Invaluable experience – go for it!

SQA Alternative Certification Model

A huge well done to all of our pupils who have worked so hard to complete assessments for this year’s SQA awards. Provisional Awards will be issued to pupils by Argyll and Bute Council via their Glow email and by letter from 25th June. Please inform the school of any changes to your home address.

We are still completing assessments for many pupils in subjects across the school. It is therefore vitally important that all pupils continue to attend all their classes next week. If pupils have finished all their assessments then they will be preparing for their new courses.

P7-S1 Transition

A reminder that we have established a glow site for new S1 pupils. The site contains information about Oban High School and includes a virtual tour of the school building.  Pupils are also able to submit questions to the school, which we will answer via video response on a regular basis. Current P7s will need to be logged in to glow to view the site. The site is available at https://sites.google.com/ab.glow.scot/ohs-transition/.

We will be communicating information regarding clans to pupils via primary school the week beginning Monday 31st May.  Following this, parents/carers and pupils are invited to join their Clan for an online gateway meeting on the following dates:

Date/Time Clan Google Meet Code
Monday 7th June Somerled meet.google.com/wfc-orcs-pnk
Tuesday 8th June Fingal meet.google.com/rwn-wxqs-hdg
Wednesday 9th June Ossian meet.google.com/wbc-jtwz-xwg
Thursday 10th June Diarmid

meet.google.com/ymk-vmcu-dfm

We will also set up a google classroom for pupils in June, which will contain videos and tasks from each of the faculties in the school.  This will allow pupils to become more familiar with our school, staff and the learning that takes place in S1.

We have received confirmation that our in-person induction days cannot go ahead in June, unless because of exceptional need.  As a result, we will hold two induction days at the start of term for our S1 pupils, where they will spend time in clans with their guidance teacher and clan class teacher and get to know the high school before starting their S1 timetable.
